Previewing the Southeast Region

On paper, the Southeast has been called the weakest of the four regions, however, that just means it is one of the trickiest to predict. Pitt appears to have an easier path than any of the other four #1 seeds, due largely to the ridiculous over-seeding of the Florida Gators and the weakening of the BYU Cougars due to the suspension of leading rebounder and best defender, Brandon Davies.

Wisconsin and Kansas State are interesting teams looking in the potential 4 vs 5 game, as both have taken down number one seeds this season; Ohio State and Kansas respectively. Meanwhile #6 seed St. John’s, despite a bevy of losses, has beaten more Top Ten teams than anyone else in the field.

In the higher seeds, last year’s tourney darling Butler seems to have righted the ship and can’t be considered an easy-out for the occasionally offensively-challenged Pitt Panthers. And Butler can’t look past their first-round opponent, Old Dominion. The Monarchs upset Notre Dame in the first round last year, holding Notre Dame’s senior star Luke Harangody to a career-low two points in the process. ODU is as good defensively as any team in the region, including Pitt, and could be a very difficult matchup in the second round.

Three double-digit seed dangers make their home in the Southeast region as well; Gonzaga, Utah State and Wofford all have significant tournament experience and a roster full of veterans, savvy ballhanders and enough sharp-shooters to spring first round upsets.

It’s going to be an exciting region, even if the names don’t pop off the page like they do in the East and West. Let’s take a look at some first round matchups, as well as who is going to advance, and eventually who will be cutting down the nets and making their way to Houston.

Ten Best Players in the Southeast Region:
Ashton Gibbs (Pitt), Brad Wanamaker (Pitt), Jordan Taylor (Wisconsin), John Lauer (Wisconsin), Jacob Pullen (Kansas State), Jimmer Fredetter (BYU), Chandler Parsons (Florida), Kalin Lucas (Michigan State), Dwight Hardy (St. John’s), Frank Hassel (ODU),

First Round Matchups:

#1 Pitt vs. #16 Ark Little Rock/UNC Asheville

In the top half of the bracket, Pitt should have little difficulty dispatching the winner of the Arkansas Little Rock v. UNC Asheville winner. They then face the winner of one of the best first-round games, a mid-major battle between Butler and Old Dominion.

#8 Butler v. #9 Old Dominion

I like the Monarchs stifling defense giving Butler fits. The Bulldogs had some magic last year, but it might have left early along with Gordon Hayward. ODU finished 27-6 and won the ultra-competitive Colonial Tournament. They won non-conference games over Clemson, Richmond and Xavier; all NCAA Tournament teams.

#5 Kansas State v. #12 Utah State

Utah State will be the popular upset pick, but let me caution you against betting against Jacob Pullen and the Wildcats. Kansas State is far to athletic for the Aggies, who have no answer for Pullen and the stable of long, athletic bigs Kansas State brings to the party. Utah State is a good shooting team, and has the potential to get hot from three and spring the upset, but I think Kansas State is head and shoulders better than Utah State and should roll in the first round.

#4 Wisconsin v. #13 Belmont

Wisconsin has been a consistent high-seed, thanks in large part to their incredible performance in the Kohl Center. It inflates their record and gives them a few marquee wins. This year is no exception, as they knocked off Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois, all in dominant fashion. However away from home they lost to those same teams, as well as UNLV and Notre Dame. In fact, other than Marquette they didn’t beat an NCAA Tournament team away from home all season.

Belmont has been sniffing the upset for quite some time, most notably their near-win over #2 Duke three seasons ago. They finished 30-4, and almost knocked off Tennessee in Knoxville, falling 66-65. I think this is the year they finally get their tournament win, in my Southeast Upset Special – Belmont Bruins over Wisconsin.

#6 St. John’s v #11 Gonzaga

This is my other first-round upset special. I like the poise and size of Gonzaga knocking off the erratic, but talented St. John’s Red Storm. Did you see the way St. John’s handled pressure situations in the Big East Tourney?? They may be a senior-laden ball club, but they aren’t a tourney-experienced ball club. Gimme the Zags rekindling some of the Cinderella magic that first put them on the map.

#3 BYU v. #14 Wofford

Wofford is nothing if not battle tested. The Terriers faced one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, playing Minnesota, Clemson, Xavier, George Mason, Georgetown and VCU. They beat Mason and took Xavier to three overtimes before falling, but the losses laid a foundation for a great Southern Conference season.

BYU has endured the much-publicized suspension of forward Brandon Davies, but still has a guy names Jimmer Fredette pulling the strings. Wofford is going to put one heckuva scare into BYU, but in the end, I like Jimmer prevailing through to round 2.

#7 UCLA v. #10 Michigan State

Another fantastic first round match-up, an odd place for these two schools who have dominated the tourney for much of the last decade to be meeting up. UCLA is the higher seed, but Michigan State is the better team. Kalin Lucas should be able to control tempo, and as long as the Spartans shots don’t go ice cold, as they have on more than a few occasions this season, they should be able to get past UCLA.

#2 Florida v. #15 UC Santa Barbara

Florida is ridiculously over-seeded at a #2, but they should still advance though this game with little trouble. Plus, the game is in St. Pete, a virtual home game for the Gators whose fans should be attending en masse.

Moving Through the Region:

I like Pittsburgh getting past a tough ODU team, and meeting up with Kansas State in the Sweet 16. In the bottom half of the bracket, I’m going with complete chaos – Florida getting stunned at “home” by a resurgent Michigan State team and Gonzaga clipping the BYU Cougars.

In the Elite 8, I’ll take Pitt and Michigan State with Pitt cutting down the nets and heading off to Houston. I am reluctant to pick Pitt in an NCAA Tournament, given their perilous history of underperforming in March, but as the already-weak bracket falls apart all around them, it’s hard not to pick the Panthers to advance. Their biggest obstacle would be their Sweet 16 game with Kansas State, who has both the talent and tournament experience to knock them off.

SOUTHEAST CHAMP: PITT PANTHERS

UPSET PICKS:
Gonzaga, Michigan State and Belmont

Colonial Duel - Will Both End Up Standing??

Very, very, VERY under the radar, the most important game played in college basketball today took place in Richmond, Virginia in the always tourney-dangerous Colonial League.  Old Dominion captured an enormous win at Virginia Commonwealth to pull to within a game of VCU and George Mason for the conference lead.  More importantly, by earning the season split they are now easily ahead of the Rams in the at-large pecking order.

All three team now sit squarely on 20 wins, and all three are worthy of at-large invitations.  However, conference perceptions being what they are, MOST sites project only two CAA teams earning a bid.  That makes today's road win for Old Dominion the most important and influential win on a packed Saturday slate of games.

Old Dominion moved to 11-4 in conference, and 20-6 overall.  The Monarchs own wins over Xavier, Clemson, Richmond, and Dayton, as well as splits with conference mates VCU and George Mason.  Two of their other six losses were at Georgetown and Missouri.  They have only two bad losses; Delaware and Drexel (and Drexel also beat Louisville at Louisville this season).

VCU has fared well against a challenging slate as well, knocking off UCLA, but losing to Tennessee, UCLA, UAB and Richmond, as well as a bad loss to South Florida.  They are a game ahead of ODU in conference play at 12-3 (20-7 overall), but have yet to play George Mason.  Those two square off Tuesday in yet another enormous game, as the loser slides into a second place tie with ODU - and neither can boast the out of conference scalps the Monarch carry into Selection Sunday.

I didn't have a chance to watch the ODU/VCU game today - so here's a couple good links for a game recap.

Hidden Gem of the Day: Missouri Hosting Old Dominion

To the best of my knowledge, tonight's ODU @  Mizzou game isn't going to be televised, but I am really intrigued to see how this one unfolds.  Old Dominion is a good ball club, one I expect to make the tourney, however I think Mizzou is a disastrous matchup for teams without sparkling point guard play and either 1. athleticism to keep up with the breakneck Tigers, or 2) Incredible discipline to slow down and squeeze the life out of the game.

ODU's best shot is #2, however I don't think it's going to be enough.  Missouri is the best team in the country no one is talking about, with their only blemish an overtime defeat to Georgetown.  If for no reason other than the pace they play they create interesting matchups and contrasting styles.  This year's ODU team is very similar to last year's squad that knocked off Notre Dame in Round One, and much more built to slug it out with the more rugged BEast schools than the uber-quick uptempo squads.

MANIACS PICK:  Missouri -8.5

Games to Watch - Saturday December 11th

For those of you who have the college football "in-between blues," that odd period where teams dangle in limbo for two to five weeks waiting for their bowl games...all of which mean absolutely NOTHING save for one, saddle up for a fantastic day of college hoops that will bring it from noon until well after midnight.

Here's a quick overview of a few games worth catching or at least DVR'ing.

12:00 PM:  UNLV @ Louisville - Both teams are off to flying starts, undefeated and already possessing a few quality wins.  Tomorrow is a great opportunity to find out if Louisville's fast start is an indication they can compete in the loaded Big East and also an opportunity for the left half of the country to get a chance to see a very good UNLV team play.  UNLV has had the Cards number, beating them in each of the past two seasons (Louisville teams that were better, at least on paper, than this year's squad.)

This might actually be the best game of the day, a great way to kick of some hoops watching before lunchtime.  For the UNLV kids, it will be like playing a game at 9AM with the time change.  That's tough to do, and I think they'll come out a little flat and jet lagged.  Give me the Cards laying 3.5

2:30 PM:  Wisconsin @ Marquette - This game has quietly become one of the better rivalry games in the country over the past few seasons.  Both teams have a strong similarity in that it seems every season they are picked somewhere near the middle of the pack in their respective conferences, and sure enough, every year they exceed expectations and head to the Tournament.

This year looks to be playing out exactly the same way.  Both teams enter at 7-2, with their losses coming against ranked foes and in close games.  Both have a few quality wins under their belt but can desperatly use another one before tackling conference play in the two toughest conferences in the nation.

Marquette will have the valuable home crowd advantage but I have a feeling Wisconsin has a touch more discipline and a little more cohesion and poise at this early juncture in the season.  Gimme the Badgers +1.

3:15 PM:  Tennessee @ Pitt - The Vols have been one of the season's pleasant surprises.  Tomorrow will be one of Pearl's last games on the sidelines before his oddly-arranged SEC-only eight game suspension takes effect.  Both teams are athletic and very physically tough.  I like Pitt at home in a really good ball game but nine points is a lot to lay considering this will likely be a game in the fifties or sixties.  I'll take the Vols and the +9.

4:00 PM:  Kansas State @ Loyola (IL) -  Odd line of the day.  not sure how K-State is laying only 8.5.  Gimme the Wildcats in a 20+ point romp.

4:00 PM:  Dayton @ Old Dominion -  The Flyers are reeling, despite their 7-2 record.  However, this is a talented and experienced club that should turn the corner soon.  Old Dominion continues their aggressive schedule with yet another hopeful tourney team.  I think the Monarchs win at home, but I'll take the Flyers +10.5

4:30 PM:  Washington @ Texas A&M - Texas A&M can land a clear blow for the Big 12 versus the Pac 10 with a win today at home.  Texas A&M is off to a good start at 8-1, however their only win of note came over Temple.  Washington has been carrying the banner as the only ranked team in the Pac 10, but it's hard to put A&M any better than sixth in the loaded Big 12.  I'm not sure if Washington feels any pressure to prop up their sagging conference, but a loss today is actually pretty damaging to league's overall profile.  I'll take Washington on the road, minus one and a half.

5:15 PM:  Indiana @ Kentucky - One of my favorite rivalries takes place today, and though much of the shine has faded over the past decade with neither school managing to be good at coinciding times, it still means a ton to their respective fan bases.  Indiana is in year three of the Tom Crean Era, and call me a hater, but it doesn't seem any real progress has been made.  Meanwhile in the Bluegrass it took Calipari all of half a day to bring the 'Cats from "NIT" to "Final Four" caliber.

There's still a pretty big hill to climb in Bloomington, and I don't think today will be a step in that direction.  Give me Big Blue laying the thirteen points.

6:00 PM:  Arizona @ BYU - Sean Miller's Cats seem to be on the right track to erasing the memory of last year's rare tourney absence.  It had been nearly thirty years since the Cats were left out, and I'm sure Miller would like to put another thirty years distance in the rear view mirror.  A win today in Provo would go a long way.  I think they'll get it.  Gimme Arizona +2.5

7:00 PM:  Virginia Commonwealth @ Richmond - The sneaky gem in today's bursting schedule is this top-tier matchup between the CAA and the A-10.  Both schools have designs on playing in March, however neither league is notorious for collecting armloads of at-large bids.  Both schools could really use the chip today's win would provide.

VCU's two losses are quality; Tennessee and to lesser extent, South Florida.  They also boast quality wins over UCLA and Wake Forest.  Richmond's losses are a little less solid; Old Dominion and Iona, however their wins are better; particularly the win over Purdue.

This should be a really good game, likely close, so I'll take VCU +8

8:30 PM:  Gonzaga @ Notre Dame -  The Zags are really struggling, and at 4-4 can ill-afford many more losses if they plan to continue their decade-long NCAA Tournament streak.  Notre Dame was one of the season's early surprises until Kentucky took some of their shine Wednesday night.  The line on this one is huge at 10.5, a number I think reflects a lack of confidence in Gonzaga rather than a ton of faith in the Irish.  I'm not so sure that either is warranted.  Give me Gonzaga and the points, and don't be surprised if they clip them straight up.

Maniac's Picks: Louisville -3.5, Wisconsin +1, Tennessee +9, Kansas State -8.5, Dayton +10.5, Washington -1.5, Kentucky -13, Arizona +2.5, VCU +8, Gonzaga -10.5

Xavier to Face Old Dominion in Paradise Jam Final

It hasn't always been pretty, but the Muskies have made it to 4-0, heading into the Paradise Jam final against fellow don't call us "mid" major, Old Dominion.

Both teams have NCAA aspirations that don't hinge simply on winning their league tournaments in March, and picking up the win tomorrow would be a nice chip in each team's pile.  The Monarchs advanced after narrowly edging Clemson, 61-60, while Xavier survived an unbalanced offensive night and held off the Seton Hall Pirates 57-52.

Xavier got just 25 points from players NOT named Tu (formerly, Terrell) Holloway.  The same group combined for 10 of 28 shooting.  Holloway has shown early on this season that he should have been included on the 50-man Naismith Watch List, averaging 27 points, 6 board and more than 5 assists.  While Holloway's play has been unquestionably superb, if Xavier can't find someone else to help carry the offensive load this season, it's hard to see them winning games when their schedule begins to escalate, which it will VERY quickly.

Call me "Tu" but give me three.
The obvious candidates is sophomore Mark Lyons, though he is hampered somewhat by the similaraities in his and Tu's game, as well as some poor shot selection.  Junior seven footer Kenny Frease's game has improved each season, but is still far from a reliable consistent post scoring option.  Dante Jackson is more of a defensive player and occassional spot up shooter and Jamel McLean is a freakish athlete, but limited on what he can do with the ball.  If one of the above doesn't begin making more significant offensive contributions, Chris Mack might have to experiment deeper on the bench to find some offensive balance.

For Old Dominion, the Paradise Jam Final represents another important chance to stack an automatic bid-worthy chip in their favor.  Their first opportunity narrowly slipped away as they lost their opener to Georgetown (who won their tournament, beating Vandy and Minnesota).

The game tips tomorrow night around 8:30 tomorrow and can be found on MOST Fox Sports affiliates.

Firday's Bracket Buster Games - Maniac's Picks

OK, couldn't get anything to work underneath that stupid graphic, so the picks are here in a new post.

Tonight's first game might be the best overall basketball game of the event.  Most people are going to sell you Butler and Siena, because you remember the names from tourney's past.  But the two teams outside of the big leagues aside from Butler and Gonzaga that people haven't seen play that can WIN a game or two in the tourney take stage tonight.

Old Dominion has gone on the road and beaten some big boys already, namely knocking off Georgetown back in December when they were undefeated.  The are 13-3 in a good and balanced Colonial league and in my opinion should be a lock for the tourney.  That said, they are not a lock for the tourney.  Going to Cedar Rapids and beating the ranked Panthers tonight would be huge.

Northern Iowa is on pretty safe footing, having already sewn up the Valley regualr season title and sweeping Wichita State.  The loss last week to Bradley probably knocks them off the 4-5 lines and leaves them hoping for a six and expecting a seven or and eight.  Tonight's win probably keeps them safely in the 6-7 range, so seeding wise, a big game for UNI.

In the late game, William & Mary looked dead a few weeks ago at 8-5 and in fifth place in the CAA.  However, they have run off three in a row to get to 18-7, (11-5) and still own those road wins over Wake and Maryland.  Are they alive for an at-large?  Barely, and admitedly need some good things to happen around them.  Lose tonight and that slim sliver of hope gets solely pinned on the CAA tourney.  Who wins that one is anyone's guess, as the league is deep and balanced (George Mason, Northeastern and VCU also lurk in the mix).

Iona has no shot at an at-large, and here-in lies my gripe with the whole "Bracketbuster" notion.  What does W&M have to gain tonight?  It's nice to play on TV (I'm sure it will pull in huge numbers at 9pm on a Friday night opposite the Olympics and people who have a LIFE on Friday night - Maniac, um, not included....).  Other than that, they have way more to lose than gain.  Sadly, that is the case for a lot of teams in this field (like Siena, Murray State and a few others who gain nothing from the win but are hurt badly by a loss).

On to tonight's picks.  I'm sticking with my favorite conference.  Not just because I am becoming a CAA honk, but because I believe they really do play very good basketball night in and night out.  It is unfortunate that the two teams in that league who need the BB win the most go on the road, but I'm not letting that deter me.

Maniac's Picks:
Old Dominion +3
William & Mary +4

Three Against the Wall

We are starting to get to the time of the season where we truly have enormous games, games where the losers back themselves into a corner where they pretty much have to win their conference tourney in order to make the Dance.  Three games on tonight's slate jump out to me.

In the Colonial, two teams that looked like at-large candidates two months ago find themselves at a crossroad.  William & Mary, admittedly the Maniac's darling team this season, knocked off Wake and Maryland on the road (something, coincidentally NO ACC team has done this season) and looked to be well poised to capture an at-large bid if necessary.  Old Dominion, along with VCU, captured enough momentum and quality wins pre-conference that it looked likely that at least one of them would make the field as well, possibly even making the CAA a three-bid league for the first time since the historic 2006 season.

Then conference play began, and things got a little messy.  ODU has fared well, sitting at 9-2 in league.  However, they still trail George Mason and Northeastern (both of whom did not fare well pre-conference).  William & Mary is in even a tougher spot, as they sit 7-4, tied for fifth place in the league with VCU (and behind Drexel).  The loser of tonight's contest, especially if it is W&M, will be forced to win the league tourney to get in.  The game is tonight at 7pm at Old Dominion.

Another mid-major do-or-die game features a team long so successful it feels odd to classify them as a mid-major.  Memphis is on the outside looking in as of today and is going to need to stack up some quality wins in a hurry to make the field.  They get their first chance tonight at 8pm when conference leading UAB visits the Pyramid.  Gonzaga follows them into town on Saturday. After Memphis's surprising 70-60 loss to SMU, it is fair to say they need to win both to have a good chance to capture an at-large bid.  Conference USA gets real interesting if Memphis wins tonight, as UTEP and Tulsa have both only dropped one conference game as well.  There is no way C-USA gets four bids.  I think three might be a stretch too.  Tonight is a must for Memphis.

A final mid-major delight features the two best teams in the always competitive Missouri Valley.  Wichita State was able to do something only one other team this season has last month; knock off Northern Iowa.  Tonight the Panthers get their chance to even the score when the Shockers come to the McLeod Center (8:05 EST).  For Northern Iowa, even a loss tonight, provided they suffer no other setbacks, will not prevent them from getting in the tourney.  A loss for Wichita State might.  They suffered only only one non-conference loss (to Pitt), but they have next to no quality wins to speak of either.  Their best win is Texas Tech.  After that it's just Iowa, Cleveland State...and it gets worse from there.  I am not sure the Valley is strong enough to earn an at-large bid for a team with four conference losses, which is what the Shockers will be if they drop tonight's game.  It is a must win for Wichita State.

Three games to watch, though they might be hard to watch (unless you have Dish or Direct TV).  Enjoy 'em if you can.

Maniac's Picks:
William & Mary +12
UAB +7.5
Wichita State +6
(I like all three with the points, but think only Memphis gets the must-win they need)

Bracket Busters 2010

A big thanks to eyeonsportsmedia.com for updating this year's Bracket Buster field.

For those not familiar with the event, 22 teams from Mid-Major conferences are paired up for 11 nationally televised games on ESPN.  It is thought to give programs a chance to gain some national exposure and rack up one more quality win with which to dangle in front of the selection committee.  In my humble opinion, it often backfires by showing a borderline team to be inadequate, and thus NIT-fodder.  But alas, here is this year's field.. Check a seperate column closer to the games for my intrepid picks (and of course who is IN and OUT for March)

Wednesday's Hidden Gems - There are a TON

Tonight is the culmination of the Big Ten - ACC Challenge, with the conferences knotted at three apiece. However, there is a bevy of quality and intriguing hoops going on in places lesser covered. The Maniac is here to provide a guide to some games worth catching, and some early fine tuning of the Cinderella slipper-worthiness (worthiness is a word, per Seinfeld's "sponge worthiness" episode) across the nation's landscape.

Pitt (-5.5) @ Duquesne: The Maniac liked Duquesne as a sleeper tourney pick out of the improved, balanced Atlantic Ten. Then they went out and lost to Western Carolina, after struggling to a three point win over Arkansas-Monticello. Yep, the famed power Arkansas-Monticello. Not an impressive start. But keep in mind they just got 6'3'' scoring guard Melquan Boldin back this week, giving the four of the five leading scorers from 2008-09 back on the floor.

Meanwhile Pitt has looked impressive, starting 5-1 and playing Texas tough for 32 minutes before capitulating late. The names on the front of the jerseys and the early season results would seem to tilt the scales pretty heavily in Pitt's favor. I still like the Dukes tonight, as the game means just a little bit more for them.

Here's a nice article on the history of the series. Plus, Papa Maniac will appreciate the reflection on the Duquesne glory days...

Siena @ Georgia Tech (-6): Georgia Tech is the only ACC squad not playing in the Challenge this week, but will still get a challenge from the Siena Saints. Siena burst into national consciousness with the Double OT upset of Ohio State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last year. They even opened this season ranked in several polls. However they have already lost to both Temple and St. John's; both bubble teams at best.

This looks like a classic case of the long underrated proving to be, um, more "appropriately" rated. Georgia Tech however is a budding beast. Long gone is the 11-18 season of 2008-2009. These Jackets have no intention of sitting out this postseason.

Give me the Jackets to win and cover.

Old Dominion @ Richmond (-3): Another great matchup of small school potential darlings come March. Old Dominion entered the season as the favorite in the undervalued CAA. Richmond is one of the sleepers (behind Xavier and Dayton) to shake up the A-10.

Richmond is 6-1 with wins over Missouri and Mississippi State, and their lone loss to William & Mary (not a bad loss - seriously - click here), Old Dominion has been a little less sharp losing the the same two school Richmond padded their resume against.

However the head-to-head matchup is the true test. If we were playing the who-beat-who game, LeMoyne is better than North Carolina.

That said, I like Richmond in a really intriguing ballgame.

Western Kentucky @ South Carolina (-5.5): South Carolina and Devan Downey entered the season hoping to challenge Kentucky and Tennessee in the SEC East; and expecting to dance in March. They got their doors blown off by Miami and showed the hangover effect, giving up 93 points to Jacksonville in a game they were lucky to win 97-93.

Their next three games will really set the table for how much work they will have to get done in the insanely deep and balanced SEC (no, they are not the best conference, but have less drop off from 3 to 11 than any other league). After this they host Clemson and travel to Richmond. First things first, knock off a twice-defending Sweet 16 participant in the Hilltoppers.

The Hilltoppers have been really disappointing thus far; losing to LSU and Indiana State, and winning by only 4 and 1 vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee and CS Northridge. Yuck.

South Carolina needs to bring some focus tonight. I think they will, and will win convincingly.

Rhode Island @ VCU (-4): Eric Maynor is gone, but VCU and first-year coach Shaka Smart have no intention of sitting out this year's Big Dance. They have already burried the memory of the loss to Western Michigan with big wins over Oklahoma and Nevada.

Rhode Island was one of the last teams on the outside of the bubble last year. Their early 4-0 start contains little to help remedy that in 2010. Tonight is huge for the Rams. They still have shots against Oklahoma St, Boston College and Providence. They can't afford many losses unless they want to be forced to win the A-10 to dance.

A really good game that most people will miss; give me RI in a close win.

Arkansas @ Oklahoma (-12): Hard to believe how much worse this game is than it sounds like it should be. Oklahoma has struggled mightily learning how to cope with the loss of the Griffin boys. Arkansas is scouring the campus for enough warm bodies to dress. What is this, Hickory High School??

Cover your eyes, and expect Oklahoma to take out a little frustration on the hapless Hogs.

The Maniac takes Willie Warren and the Sooners in a romp.

Oklahoma State (-2.5) @ Tulsa: This is one of the best games of the early season. An no one will get to see it. Except for the kids parents. And Tulsans. (Is that right? Tulsasians? Tulsainians? Can anyone help with this?)

Oklahoma State is has six easy cruising wins. However only the latest against Utah (who boasts losses to ) is evenly remotely relevant. After this, their only "games" before Big 12 play are against Pacific, Stanford and Rhode Island. All decent teams, but the Cowboys have a lot more opportunity for "bad losses" then they do "good wins." They need tonight more than it seems from a distance.

Their is no doubt of the importance of this game for Tulsa. Conference USA has become a one-bid league, more inline with the WCC and MVC than the Big Six. Many experts tabbed Tulsa as the pre-season fave (not us, it is still Memphis by a lot). They enter tonight 5-1, fresh off a loss to Missouri State. Tonight is a must win if they want to entertain notions of an at-large bid. After tonight, their two best remaining non-conference games are Colorado and Nebraska.

A won't put an official pick on this one; it really is a coin-flip to me. That said, I think the MO St. loss is a clear result of looking ahead to tonight and that Tulsa will give them one heck of a battle defending their home court.

These games all tip between 7-8pm EST. It is a fantastic early night for college hoops and one that will be reference back all season long as we begin to sort out RPI's and Power Rankings.
