The best thing about it - in six hours SOMEONE not on the list will prove they should have been.
PG - Derrick Rose - a real tough call, as Collinson and Lawson are both fantastic, but to me Derrick Rose presents a match up problem unlike any other in the Final Four. His blend of strength and quickness makes him a mismatch on any of the smaller PG's left in the tourney.
SG - Russel Westbrook - another tough choice, picking him over Chalmers of KU and Douglass-Roberts. Westbrook's ability to dictate the game from a defensive standpoint will be key to slowing the Tigers fantastic backcourt.
SF - Brandon Rush - Kansas's fate swings on whether or not Rush is able to show up on the big stage. He has been here and there in the NCAA tournament. He needs to be ALL there for KU to hang with the Tar heel's explosive offensive attack.
PF - Tyler Hansbrough - Is there any doubt? Yes, Kevin Love has been fantastic (you can cheat and call him a center if you want...) but Tyler Hansbrough has been consistently dominant. Those who question his athleticism, check out the put back dunk against Louisville in the closing minutes.
C - Sasha Kaun - The underrated big man provides a David Padgett-like stabilizing effect on the Jayhawks. His ability to stay on the floor and out of foul trouble is vital for the Jayhawks to beat UNC.
Coach - Roy Williams - All three are fantastic coaches, but only Williams can rely back on the experience of cutting down the nets. Howland will get his third consecutive crack at it, and Calipari heads to the Final Four for the first time without Marcus Camby on the payroll. Bill Self will be playing with house money, having the BCTNFF monkey off his back.
Where We Stand
One day from an amazing pair of National Semi-Final Games... and the pool is still WAY up for grabs. I will spare you most of the tedious analysis. Instead here are the front runners for the championship!
North Carolina:
Definitely the most popular champion selection, and it appears to be for good reason. The Tar Heels are the only team to have not been truly pushed and tested in the tourney (though Memphis put that Mississippi State game WAY in the rear mirror last weekend). If the Heels cut down the nets, frontrunners are:
Gavin (87): UNC over UCLA
Kevin J (86): UNC over Memphis
BTown (84): UNC over UCLA
Judy (83): UNC over UCLA
Kansas:
Was anyone OTHER than the people listed below NOT pulling for Davidson???
Chandler (88): Kansas over Memphis
Shanda (84) : Kansas over Texas
It gets real interesting if it is Kansas v. Memphis and Kansas wins... all kinds of math to do....
UCLA:
Can college basketball's most stories program get its first title without cheaping in more than 25 years?? (Sorry, the Harrick one is tainted Bruin fans) If so, there will be a few happy folks below.
Jim (78): UCLA over UNC
Bill (73): UCLA over UNC
John K (71) UCLA over L'Ville
Memphis:
Can Derrick Rose, CDR and company continue to lead by enough that foul foulshooting doesn't matter?? If so, a few people could charge from the back to in the money.
Mike K (71): Memphis over Tennessee (I think it is unlikely Mike can win, with TN costing him points, but it is still nice to call the champ)
Hawks (63): Memphis over UNC (no chance to win - but again, you call the champ - you get a shout out on March Maniacs!)
Enjoy the games! Check back Sunday for an update! Check back often and click some ads to support the commish!
Best Four Forward
UCLA. Kansas. North Carolina. Memphis.
Four of college basketball's elite form the most formidable Final Four since the tourney began seeding 64 teams in 1985. All American's all over the place. Big name coaches. Schools rich in tradition...
So why does it seem like interest is waining?
For college basketball fans, and sports fans, this Saturday should be a dream. The four best teams squaring off head to head, the winner by Monday night will have truly established themself as the best team in the nation. So why don't more people care?
The truth is - we are a soap opera nation. Even hardcore sports fans are more seduced by the lure of a Davidson or George Mason hunting giants in the tourney. We champion Villanova 85' and NC State of 83'. We forget the brilliance of Kentucky from 96-98, and were bored of Duke by the early 2000's.
Could it really be possible that the beauty of the tournament is the frenzy of the first two weeks? Games around the clock, upsets galore, full of emerging stories of neverknowns and overlookeds. Full of drama. Full of intrigue.
There is a precedent for this same phenomenon. Last season's interest in the NBA playoffs peaked as the "Cinderella" Warriors ousted the league's top team, Dallas in round one. The gritty band of tough-nosed Warriors led by Mav's former coach Don Nelson toppling the mighty Mavericks and turning the league upside down! Watching the Bay Area crowds erupt as their team won a playoff series for the first time in far more than a decade enthralled the sports world. It had every story line imaginable. It had dramatic play, emotion and tension. It was great TV.
By the time the Warriors advanced to the next round to face the Jazz... the drama had quieted. By the time the Final rolled around (Spurs and Cavs, right??) We had lost interest.
Now the Final Four has rolled around, and it is just sports. No more soap-operas and fairy tales. Just great basketball.
And shouldn't that be celebration enough?
